Group Volunteering

San Francisco Botanical Garden has a rich history of volunteer engagement. With 55 acres maintained by 11 gardeners, volunteers provide an invaluable source of support.

In addition to individuals, we welcome volunteer groups -- corporate, school, community or otherwise. Volunteers work with professional San Francisco Recreation & Parks gardeners to maintain the Garden, with projects including planting, weeding, mulching and more.

Getting Started

  1. Review our project calendar for open project dates.
  2. Fill out the Project Request form and list preferred dates.
  3. We will confirm the project date within 2 weeks of the request.
  4. Show up on your scheduled date, ready to help out! Bring a water bottle, wear closed-toed, sturdy, shoes, and leave your valuables behind!

Open projects include Garden maintenance activities, which are limited to 15 volunteers per session. For special events, we can work with groups of up to 45 volunteers. We cannot guarantee availability for all requests, and encourage you to submit requests 6-8 weeks in advance.

Corporate Members

If you'd like to arrange a customized volunteer day, we invite you to become a Corporate Member. As a member, you can create unique opportunities for your team to be active and outside together, while learning about the Garden's unique collections. In addition, you support the Garden's mission to cultivate the relationship between people and plants, and the continued presence of a natural treasure in the heart of San Francisco. Join us for a day (or more!) of what we call Botanical Boot Camp.

Botanical Boot Camp

  • We can accommodate up to 60 volunteers in one day. Groups are split into teams of 10-15 volunteers, and may work in different collections within the Garden. Please schedule large (30 +) groups 2 months in advance.
  • Time commitment: 3.5 hours. This time includes 30 minutes for orientation and set-up, and 3 hours of work (with breaks!).
  • Scheduling: Like many gardeners, we prefer to work in the morning. Projects start at either 9 or 10am on weekdays. We have limited availability on afternoons and weekends.
  • To prepare: Volunteers should wear long pants, sturdy (closed-toed) shoes, layers and old clothes, and bring a hat, sunscreen, and water bottle. Working in the Garden can be physically demanding, so be prepared to sweat!
  • Lunch: There are many places to relax and refresh after working in the Garden. You can invite volunteers to brown bag it, arrange delivery, or reserve a location nearby. Please note on the request form that you would like to have lunch and we will help you make these arrangement.
