And so is this web page. We will be updating this web page with pictures of the project and a construction schedule as we get it. Through a combination of privately raised funds and public bond money, the Botanical Garden’s pathways project is underway. Many of our paths are in poor shape and just as many are not properly wheelchair accessible. This project will repair, repave, reroute, and regrade the paths that need it most. Of course, protection of our collections is foremost on our minds during construction. Our curatorial staff, gardeners, and two arborist firms will be following the project and advising on any sensitive areas.

You might have already noticed a construction trailer outside our service gate (Muir gate) along MLK. You will certainly soon notice the paving work being done. The first section of demolition and paving will involve the northernmost path from the restrooms near the north gate along the inside perimeter of the Botanical Garden above the Zellerbach Garden and ending at the Muir gate just past the top of the Succulent Garden. This is a major project that will be disturbing pieces of the Garden for the rest of the year, but it is phased. After one section is completed, that portion will truly be complete and ready for use again. If you don’t walk the entire Garden during your next visit, there’s a good chance you won’t notice the construction. Through signage and our website, we will do our best to notify visitors of where work is currently being done. When you’re here, just watch out for construction barriers and do not cross them for your own safety. They will be well marked.

The pathways project also includes a lot of new signage. Perimeter poles/banners will be placed at both gates. At the north gate, they will be positioned for visibility from the Music Concourse, so that visitors to the museums and the Tea Garden can find the Botanical Garden. A new wayfinding system will be put in place within the Garden. While part of the appeal of the Botanical Garden for many is to become lost in a beautiful and serene world, we’d like to keep the option open for our visitors to be able to properly find exits, bathrooms, and particular parts of our collection if they so desire.
