Lavender emerges this month as a notable member of the summer garden alongside flowering vines and the classic rose. This timeless herb known to many for its distinctive bouquet grows widely around the Mediterranean, tropical Africa and SE India. Its cultivation is as ancient as civilization itself with documented use for over 2500 years. Lavendula spp. can be found in the newly renovated Garden of Fragrance and in this month's In Bloom feature, complete with photos, a plant profile and exact locations.

New Garden of Fragrance

The new Garden of Fragrance was celebrated on a sunny June 5 morning by Pearl Kimura and other major donors who made the renovations possible. New elements encourage the use of this garden by visitors who are blind or visually impaired. The project also includes accessible pathways and restoration of the fountain depicting St. Francis.
