Rarely blooming outside its native habitat of Cape Province, South Africa, this endangered tree is notable for its stunning silver foliage. Most prominent during the summer, the silver cast of Leucodendron argenteum is caused by dense silky hairs that fold flat
against the leaf to limit transpiration, giving it its name, the "silver tree." It can be found in the South Africa garden and in this month's In Bloom feature, complete with photos, plant profile and exact locations.

While many positive changes are occurring in the Botanical Garden, the most important of those right now is the arrival of the new Director of the Botanical Garden and the Conservatory of Flowers. As many of you know, this enterprise is a public-private partnership, well over 50 years old. The management of the Botanical Garden depends not only on the staff, trustees and volunteers of the San Francisco Botanical Garden Society but also on the skills of the Recreation and Park Department partner…
