Position Overview

San Francisco Botanical Garden Society (SFBGS), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is seeking an energetic, highly motivated and service-oriented individual with strong public accounting experience, technical and analytical skills coupled with time management, communication and interpersonal skills to fill the position of Senior Accountant.

About San Francisco Botanical Garden Society

San Francisco Botanical Garden Society (SFBGS) works in partnership with the City of San Francisco/Recreation and Park Department to support San Francisco Botanical Garden, whose 55 acres in Golden Gate Park and geographic and thematic gardens include more than 8,000 different kinds of plants native to California and from throughout the world.

SFBGS's twofold mission is to build communities of support for the Botanical Garden and to cultivate the bond between people and plants. With the help of its members, donors and volunteers, SFBGS funds and oversees Garden improvements, provides curatorial and plant collections management services, propagates plants for the Botanical Garden and for sale to the public, maintains the Helen Crocker Russell Library of Horticulture, offers year-round educational and community programming, operates the Garden Bookstore and Arbor (for plant sales), and welcomes visitors from San Francisco, the Bay Area and all over the world.

About the Position

The Senior Accountant will play a key role in the design and implementation of processes and systems to accommodate SFBGS's finance operations and need for timely and accurate reports and analysis. The position is part of a two-person team and reports to the Controller. Specifically, the Senior Accountant will be expected to:

• Produce accurate and timely monthly and fiscal year-end financial statements with management analysis and commentary
• Design and implement key operational policies, processes and procedures
• Utilize advanced data mining procedures to create pivot tables and sophisticated charts and graphs to create valuable presentations for management

Responsibilities

• Utilize complex formulae such as or, vlookup, hlookup, if, plus and logic to produce desired management reports
• Perform monthly bank reconciliations for review by Controller
• Provide support and assistance with audits, tax filings, budgets and financial reporting
• Process payroll using Paychex, ADP, Paylocity or other similar software
• Perform monthly and annual close process including preparation of journal entries, monthly accruals, related reports and account reconciliations
• Provide analytical support for functional expense reviews
• Ensure that detailed accounting documentation is compiled and maintained in support of relevant legal, regulatory and audit requirements
• Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Accounting from a well-regarded 4-year university California CPA preferred
• Expert understanding of GAAP accounting practices in a nonprofit setting
• Raiser's Edge proficiency
• Advanced Excel proficiency
• Strong MAS90 and Quickbooks Enterprise proficiency
• Strong Microsoft Office suite skills, including Powerpoint and Access
• Excellent attention to detail, highly organized, able to follow directions and meet deadlines
• Highly self motivated and demonstrated ability to think strategically and analytically to restructure existing accounting procedures
• Extensive interaction with internal staff and senior management requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to juggle multiple projects while working with deadlines
