The San Francisco Botanical Garden Society is currently seeking an
Annual Giving Manager

Department: Development
Reports to: Director of Development


Position Summary: With limited supervision, the Annual Giving Manager is responsible for the overall success of the San Francisco Botanical Garden Society’s annual giving program. The manager directs and administers all aspects of the annual giving program to meet the short- and long-term needs of the Society, including gifts from individual and major donors to support unrestricted and restricted needs, annual appeal mailings, the memorial bench program, and special events. Works with Development senior staff to identify, cultivate, and solicit annual support. Responsible for managing contract consultants supporting the annual fund program.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develops annual budget and goals for the annual giving program.
  • Manages the direct mail program and interfaces with direct mail vendors.
  • Serves as staff liaison with the Board Development Committee and volunteers involved in annual giving initiatives.
  • In collaboration with the senior staff, identifies, cultivates, and solicits gift support for unrestricted and restricted needs – serves as part of solicitation team on some donor solicitations.
  • Insures proper and timely donor recognition and stewardship.
  • Responsible for the collection of donor and prospect information in the database.
  • Prepares appropriate reports on donor and program activity.
  • Coordinates all special events for annual fund cultivation and fundraising, including Garden Feast.
  • Maintains accurate records for and manages the Memorial Bench Program.
  • Represents the Society to a variety of audiences and constituencies.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Minimum of three years experience with annual giving programs.
  • Self-motivated work style.
  • Proficient in word-processing and spreadsheet software (Microsoft Office).
  • Preference given to proven Raiser’s Edge proficiency.
  • Strong written and personal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and inter-personal skills.

Required Knowledge/Skills:

  • Ability to supervise staff and volunteers, including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Knowledge of fundraising and development principles, methods, and techniques.
  • Familiarity with database management a plus.
  • Ability to foster a collegial work environment.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and direct multiple programs and activities – time management skills important
  • Ability to identify, and target prospects and to plan, organize, and direct solicitation programs.
  • Skill in budget preparation and management.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Some evening and weekend work.

Physical Demands of the Job:

  • Work is generally performed in a typical interior office environment.
  • Must be able to climb stairs.
  • Limited physical effort required; occasional lifting up to 30 lbs.
  • Limited or no exposure to physical risk.
